First things first, you need to learn how to pronounce Boerne like a local. Say it with me “Bur-nee.” Great! Now you’re ready to explore this beautiful Texas city. Boerne is located just 35 minutes from the middle of San Antonio and less than 2 hours from South Austin. It’s picture perfect Hill Country location makes it a great escape for a weekend or a day.

The Bevy
Would you believe me if I told you this boutique hotel was actually a Doubletree? The Bevy is a brand new accommodation and wow, is it beautiful! The lobby is like walking into a grand Texas Hill Country home with hospitality to match. The lobby bar opens up to the pool which has a lovely outdoor fireplace.

What to Do
Hill Country Mile
True to its name, the Hill Country Mile is a mile long stretch along Main Street in downtown Boerne of locally owned shops, galleries, and restaurants in beautiful historic buildings. Make sure you stop by the Boerne Visitors Center and pick up a “Bird’s Eye View” map so you don’t miss any of the shops, especially the ones tucked away on the side streets. There are cute clothing boutiques, home goods, and some excellent antiques to be found here.
Cave Without a Name
If I was to give a name to Cave Without a Name it would be Gorgeous! Located just a few miles outside of downtown Boerne and 80 feet below the ground, Cave Without a Name is going to be a highlight of your trip. It’s been a while since I’ve had a jaw dropping moment in nature and this cave provided one at every turn. The cave is excellent for photos, they have installed some stellar lighting and it highlights the beautiful formations. Also, make sure you buy a bag of dirt for gem panning at the gift shop. I went on this trip with three other full-grown women and we were delighted uncovering hidden gems. DELIGHTED.
Saint Tryphon Winery
The only way that I can describe Saint Tryphon Winery is a slice of heaven. This family owned winery is a short drive from downtown Boerne and what a beautiful drive it is. I was lucky enough to have a private tour by Sil, one of the owners. His passion and dedication to Texas wines is clear from the incredible story of how this winery came to be and is reflected in the wines this beautiful property produces. If you are reading this and we are still in a pandemic, make sure you check out their website to see if there are tastings happening – if not consider picking up a bottle (or case!) curbside or having it shipped directly to you. River Road Park
Just off main street is a beautiful walking trail along the Cibolo Creek. Take a picnic and enjoy watching the geese and ducks go about their day.
Main Plaza
In the heart of the Hill Country Mile is the Main Plaza, a community park that was established around 1852. In addition to it being a beautiful place to enjoy a stroll, the park has numerous festivals, concerts, car shows, and celebrations. There is also an iconic gazebo, where weddings and concerts take place.
Historic Walking Tour
When you stop at the Boerne Visitors Center, pick up a “Historic Walking Tour” Map and Guide and learn a bit more about the beautiful buildings and history of downtown Boerne.
Where to Eat
I have to admit that coming from the foodie capital Austin, TX, I didn’t have the highest expectations for a small city like Boerne. If I could go back in time and slap some sense into past Lindsay I would because wowzers, Boerne blew me out of the water with every meal I ate. Bring your stretchy pants folks, because you are going to be eating well when you visit.
Little Gretel Restaurant
Seeing as how Boerne is one of the many German settlements in Central Texas, you need to experience some authentic Central European Cuisine and the perfect place to do this is Little Gretel. Executive Chef Denise Mazal grew up in Prague and after working in restaurants all around the world brought her delicious recipes to Texas.
The patio is a beautiful spot for breakfast to start your day and just next door is Salvador DOBBS Cocktails and Bar to finish it. Also, head across the street to the River Road Park to walk off all the Czech Kolaches.
Black Rifle Coffee Shop
Black Rifle Coffee is a veteran-owned coffee company. It’s a great little coffee shop where every purchase supports veterans, law enforcement, and first responders. Perfect for grabbing a coffee and quick bite.
Compadres
One of the newest additions to the Boerne food scene and it sure is popular! Compadres is a Tex-Mex restaurant specializing in the most delicious smoked meats. While the regular menu items are incredible, keep your eyes open for Executive Chef Marco Sierra’s specials and make sure you get there early because Compadres regularly sells out.
Richter Tavern
The first thing I noticed about Richter Tavern was the beautiful architecture, the building is a renovated historic structure and it’s been married beautifully with the modern addition. The restaurant specializes in American-inspired cuisine with an emphasis on what’s fresh and in season. Everything is made in house, from the pasta to the bread to the sauces.
Cypress Grille
If you are looking for a perfect date night spot, Cypress Grille has you covered. Everyone on the trip with me agreed that this dinner was a standout. The restaurant has its own herb garden, pastas are made in house, and meat is locally sourced. Cypress Grille is now offering take out and meal kits so you are able to take some of their delicious meal to-go and have them at home. I wish I could recommend a certain dish but honestly, everything we had at our table was outstanding.
Salty & Sweet
The cutest family-owned nostalgic sweet shop located right on Main Street. Salty & Sweet has the perfect name because in addition to a huge selection of candy they also have homemade ice cream, pretzels, and popcorn! You will want to try the avocado ice cream and make sure you get a pretzel with the teriyaki dipping sauce.
